SenseAbility Therapy

Your most common questions, answered.

Have questions? Here are some common things families ask before starting therapy with SenseAbility Therapy.

Do I need a referral? +

No, you do not need a referral to access occupational therapy services at SenseAbility Therapy. Parents, carers, support coordinators and other professionals can contact us directly to make a referral or enquire about support.

How long are sessions? +

Most therapy sessions are billed as 60-minute appointments. This usually includes approximately 45 minutes of face-to-face therapy and 15 minutes for documentation, clinical planning and preparation.

Session lengths may vary depending on your child's needs and the type of service being provided. The structure and duration of the appointment will be discussed with you beforehand.

Where do sessions happen? +

Sessions can take place at home, at school, in the community or online via telehealth. SenseAbility Therapy provides services across North Brisbane and the Moreton Bay region.

The most suitable setting will depend on your child's goals and where support will be most helpful.

How do I know if my child needs occupational therapy? +

Occupational therapy may be helpful if your child is finding everyday activities more difficult than expected. This may include challenges with self-care, emotional regulation, sensory processing, attention, play, social participation, handwriting, motor skills, toileting, routines or participation at school.

You do not need to know exactly what support your child requires before getting in touch. We can discuss your concerns and help determine whether occupational therapy may be appropriate.

How long will it take to see progress? +

Every child is different, so there is no set timeframe for progress. Some families may notice small changes early on, while other goals may require more time and consistent practice.

Progress can depend on your child's needs, the frequency of therapy, opportunities to practise skills between sessions and support from family and educators. Goals will be reviewed regularly, and therapy will be adjusted as your child develops.

Can I be in the session? +

Yes. A parent or responsible caregiver is required to be present during home, community and telehealth sessions.

Parent involvement is an important part of therapy and helps you understand the strategies being used so they can be supported between sessions.

For school-based sessions, a parent does not need to attend, as the child will remain under the supervision of school staff or educators.
